Dr. Rosemary Hanrahan (Edwards) knows how powerfully dreams can touch lives and bring people together, as they do in her first novel, When Dreams Touch. Her experience as a physician, involvement with international and public health non-profit organizations, and leadership in health, education and community development in Haiti are the inspiration of When Dreams Touch.
The realization of her dream began with her medical education, having received her M.D. (1984) and Master of Public Health (2006) degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. She also completed a fellowship in transfusion medicine at the University of Alabama in 1990. In addition, she holds a Certificate in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (2006). Rosemary started volunteering and working in developing countries, including Haiti, Nepal and Botswana, in 2001.
In 2002, Rosemary joined the board of directors of Partners in Progress (PIP) and served with distinction through 2012. PIP is a Western Pennsylvania-based non-profit organization, which promotes and supports the development of sustainable communities in rural Haiti, including Fondwa.
In 2006, she added the roles of interim director and professor at the University of Fondwa (UNIF). The university opened its doors in 2004, becoming the first rural university in Haiti and offering degree programs in agronomy, veterinary medicine and business management. At UNIF, members of the latest generation of Haitian citizens learn the practical skills they need to participate in the future development of their country and to foster sustainability and a greater sense of citizenship and community.
In 2013 and 2014, Rosemary was interim executive director of University of Fondwa, USA (UNIF-USA), the U.S.-based non-profit which supports the work of the University of Fondwa in Haiti. From 2007 through 2008, she served as the executive director of Hospice St. Joseph, now part of the Diocese of Norwich, Outreach to Haiti, a Connecticut-based non-profit organization. Outreach operates and supports education, healthcare and international visitors programs.
Rosemary also collaborated and published several articles with Family Health Ministries of North Carolina to evaluate and develop options for cervical cancer screening in limited-resource countries, such as Haiti. In addition, she worked with community members and healthcare workers to design and implement a small medical laboratory and community HIV/AIDS program.
Rosemary was the 2003 and 2006 recipient of the College of American Pathologists Foundation Humanitarian Grant Award for her medical laboratory work in Haiti. In 2007, she received the Delta Omega National Honor Society Award for Best Master’s Thesis in Public Health and the Outstanding Student Award for Academic Excellence from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.
The mother of two adult sons, Dr. Edwards currently lives in Western Pennsylvania, where she fulfills practices medicine as an independent consultant for anatomic and clinical pathology practices. In addition to volunteering as a consultant in international healthcare and writing grants for non-profit organizations, she has been a board member of Vincentian Collaborative System (VCS) since 2010. VCS provides a continuum of senior services in the Western Pennsylvania region. When she is not practicing her medical profession, Dr. Edwards enjoys outdoor activities, travel, competing in triathlons and writing. When Dreams Touch is her first novel, and was released in March 2014 under her pen name, Rosemary Hanrahan.
